Legacy Poem

The legacy we leave behind is measured
against time in deeds and, kindnesses.

The legacy we leave behind is measured
in gentle acts and, lightness.

The legacy is color, music, images, poems,
a blade of grass, a song bird in winter,
snow poles in my driveway
eternal reminders
of the ephemeral violence of time.

The legacy we leave behind ought not be
wars, missile flying over head, a moral police,
innocence lost, lack of food, choice, shelter and voice.

The legacy we leave behind ought to be
counted in moments of bliss and joy,
wrapped in gifts of friendships, puppies,
and parents into old age.

The legacy we leave behind can be
measured in the world we heal,
the love we feel,
the sheer height of the coming snows,
and the cold balanced against
a hot cup of morning coffee
as the heart bends
in the winds of love

That is my wish today
a wish for unabashed joy
and moments of pure bliss
never lost to time’s mist.
That is … my wish
